MURRAY’S BARBER SHOP / THE OLD POOL HALL

Written by Canmore Museum

Murray’s Barber Shop, Pool Hall, and Confectionery was a local gathering place back in the 1970s. Pool tables were located at the back of the barber shop and local youth would play “alley games” behind the building as soon as there was some bare earth showing after the spring melt.

It was located on the corner of 7th Avenue and 7th Street (kiddy corner from the Miners Union Hall), facing north.

The joint was operated for 10 years by Murray and Irene Embury, who moved to Canmore in 1970 and retired to Vernon, BC in 1980. Murray was an avid story-teller and would jump at any opportunity to reshare one of his favourite tales, often laughing until he cried.
